PROSTATE: DEFINITION
Prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system that produces fluid for semen, which helps to transport sperm during male orgasm.
Its a walnut like gland that surrounds the urethra, the tube through which urine passes out of the body. The prostate gland is located in front of the rectum and just below the bladder.
FUNCTIONS OF THE PROSTATE
-
- It produces a fluid which adds up to the total semen required during the male climax.
-
- The fluid helps the sperm flow or move through the urethra very easily during ejaculation into the vagina.
-
- It also helps in neutralizing the acidity in both the male and female genital organ, that is, vagina and the urethra for healthy sperm flow.
-
- The fluid also energizes the sperm to move very fast during ejaculation.
-
- The fluid also helps in penetration during sexual intercourse.
-
- The gland regulates urine flow.
-
- Losing erection quicker after orgasm
-
- An increase amount of time it takes to get another erection
-
- Inability to maintain an erection throughout intercourse
TYPES OF PROSTATE DISORDERS
-
- Acute Bacterial Prostatitis: It is caused by bacteria which come with fever and chill also pain in the lower back, burning or pain during urination.
- Chronic (non bacterial) Prostatitis: This is not caused by bacteria but symptoms are similar to acute bacteria prostatitis.
- These symptoms are mild but can last longer.
-
- A symptomatic Inflammatory Prostatities: Inflammation of the prostrate for which the cause of the inflammation is not yet known.
-
- B. P. H; Benigh Prostatic Hyperplasis / Hypertrophy: Is the enlargement of the prostrate, frequently occurring in men over the age of 40.
- The enlargement can result in a gradual squeezing of the urethra
- Which can cause symptoms such as: inability to urinate, frequent urination, pain and burning sensations, weak urinary stream, etc.
-
- Prostate Cancer: This Is the abnormal growth of cells in a prostrate, characterized by a dull, deep pain in lower back, loss of weight and appetite, fatigue. nausea and vomiting
PROSTATE ENLARGEMENT OR BENIGH PROSTATIC HYPERPLASIA (BPH)
It is the result of an increase in the number of cells in the prostate gland.
CAUSES
-
- AGEING: Naturally, the prostate enlarged as men attain the of 40 years and above.
-
- This normally occurred as result of hormonal change.
-
- HERIDITY: Research show that, males born into family with prostate disorders stands a higher risk of getting the disease than those without any family history.
-
- KEEPING OR HOLDING THE URINE FOR LONG TIME: Cultivating the habit of holding urine for long time, puts pressure on the prostate to become inflamed.
-
- UNTREATED INFECTION (GONORREHOEA): STDs that are not properly treated, turned to affect the prostate after few years later.
-
- LACK OF EXERCISE: Inadequate exercise gives the prostate abnormal shape. This is because the muscular tissues of the prostate are not active making it to enlarge.
-
- LACK OFVEGETABLES IN THE DIET: Vegetables such as, Tomatoes, Water Melon, Spinach, Broccoli etc are rich in lycopene which protect the prostate.
- These suggest that, their absence in the diet can cause the prostate to enlarge.
-
- TOO MUCH EATING OF REDMEAT: Research shows that, people who eat a lot of meat are likely experience prostate disorder than those who solely depend on fish.
-
- TOO MUCH SITTING AT ONE PLACE: The prostate is located at the neck of the bladder between the anus and testicle region so that sitting at one place for long time puts a lot of pressure on the prostate thereby making it grow bigger.
PHYSICAL CAUSES
-
- Nervous debility: Lack of blood flow to blood vessels into the penis during erection.
-
- Venereal Diseases (Sexually Transmitted Infections).
-
- Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
-
- Diabetic (nerve damage from long standing diabetes)
-
- Hormonal Disorders/Imbalance (Decreased libido can be caused of low testosterone or androgen)
-
- Cardiovascular disorders affecting the blood supply to the pelvis.
- Problems with an enlarged prostate gland
-
- Alcoholism and other forms of drug abuse (Chronic use of alcohol, narcotics, marijuana, excessive use of tobacco and damage penile arteries).
-
- Certain prescription medication (antidepressant, antihistamine, some psychotherapeutic drugs and antihypertensive drug stimulant etc..
-
- Some birth defects
SYMPTOMS
-
- FREQUENT URINATION: This is where a person urinate more frequently but severe in the night in most cases. The patient urine interval is abnormal.
-
- This happens because, the patient did not entirely empty his bladder so that any little addition of urine in the bladder the patient has to urinate again and again.
-
- URINARY URGENCY: This is a condition where the prostrate patient is unable to control himself anytime he feels to urinate. Most of the time we see patients rushing to washrooms or stand at inconvenient places urinating.
-
- It isn’t that they don’t want to do the right thing but its just that they are unable to control themselves in that situation.
-
- INTERRUPTED STREAM: This is also known as start-stop urination where, the patient has no intention of stopping or continuing the urination but the urine cut by its self and starts by itself.
-
- BURNING SENSATION: The symptoms occur, during and after urination where most patient feels pepper like burnings in their urethra (penis).
-
- The discomfort urination happen because the prostate is pressing against the urethra closing the passage or the canal for the urine to flow freely.
-
- WEAK URINARY STREAM: This is low pressure urination where the expected pressure or force that will push the urine out is so low, slowing the urine processes thereby spreading the urine.
-
- DRIBBLING: It occurs at the end of urination where the patient experience linkages after urination has been completed and the patient dress himself up.
-
- For this reason most prostate patients are using adults pampers just to save themselves from disgrace.
-
- DIVIDED STREAM: When the prostate enlarged, it press on the urethra closing the passage of the urine so that if the patient should push it hard during urination then the urine is likely to divides into two.
-
- This sign normally shows up in the early stage of the prostate enlargement.
-
- SEVERE WAIST AND ABDOMINAL PAIN: The enlargement of the prostate slows the urine flow putting a lot of pressure on the bladder as more and more urine is stored in it.
-
- This expansion of the bladder makes the patient feel pains in the abdomen which subsequently affect the waist.
-
- SEXUAL WEAKNESS: One of the functions of the prostate is to produce a fluid during male organism, so that if the prostate is inflamed it will not be able to function well.
-
- This will result in premature ejaculation, painful ejaculation, less firm erection, etc.
